Deb and Don Burger think out of the box so much, following creative urges.
I love, love their ways of being in the world.
Since they moved away last year, I’ve missed seeing them in town, so it was great to visit them a few days ago.
When I knew I’d be driving to Kentucky in April, I contacted Deb and Don to see if I could visit them in Jonesborough, Tennessee on my way home, and they responded in the affirmative.
Deb said they’d be home for two days from their week at the John Campbell Folk School, where she was teaching crochet, so my timing worked well. They’d have a chance to settle back in a bit before I arrived.
When Deb and Don bought their tumbling-down house, their neighbors heartily thanked the do-most-of- it-yourself couple.
I can imagine the neighbors’ delight that love and life would rise again from this long-abandoned property.
Entering their creatively refurbished home on East Main St., books gaze down from over-the-doorway shelves. Yarn cozily nestles inside bins stacked to the ceiling. Herb pots vertically balance, calling Dr. Seuss to mind.
Whimsical touches are everywhere you look, as this conscious couple lives joyfully with their hearts and eyes open.
We drink from Don’s handcrafted mugs.
Deb wears crocheted creations, and weaves a rug on a loom Don made.
I hear Deb’s book I bought in November calling me to enter – Look, Learn & Create Crochet.
Then there’s Don’s Ninja-style Kindness Crusade, his one-of-a-kind habit of spreading smiles through acts of kindness he initiates.
How many of us could join Don’s Crusade?
And what joy does he create when their grandchildren visit?
Setting old watch parts and pennies on the railroad track, of course…before collecting flattened booty.
Creativity on Steroids Times 10
Priceless.
Deb and Don, thank you so much for being your sweet selves, and for all the light and love you radiate.
Blessings as you continue loving life in your new home and community.
